The concessionaire Aeroportos Brasil Viracopos won the Viracopos auction held in February 2012 and, at the end of August of the same year, started the works of the first investment cycle of the airport complex. After the works, the airport gained the capacity to serve 25 million passengers per year, in a modern terminal that offers more comfort and safety for its users.
The new terminal began operating scheduled international commercial flights on November 29, 2014. The airport closed the year 2018 with a turnover of more than 9 million passengers. Viracopos was elected 10 times the Best Airport in Brazil in a passengers’ survey conducted by the Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SAC). In 2018, it was also recognized as the most punctual airport in Brazil and the third most punctual in the world. In addition, it was chosen the best airport of cargo transport in the world according to a study carried out by Air Cargo World. These achievements reaffirm the company’s commitment to the quality of its services and its concern for the well-being of its customers.
Viracopos In-Court Reorganization
Since February 2013, when Viracopos Airport started to be managed by the private sector, the effective demand for passenger and cargo transportation has been, year after year, much lower than that of the Demand Study published by ANAC during the bidding stage, and such situation was aggravated by the economic-financial imbalance of the concession, as well as by the serious crisis faced by the country since 2014.
However, the crisis experienced is fully surmountable, since the purpose of the concession is being met, in such manner that the airport services are being provided to users with quality and full compliance, with all the necessary legal requirements.
For these reasons, the company requested the in-court reorganization proceedings in order to allow the concessionaires to negotiate with their creditors the conditions for their recovery.
